3 | Out-route: Run 6 steps and plant with inside foot. Run to sideline. Purpose: Essentially to block receiver #1’s defender. Then in confusion be open toward sideline. You are the SECOND receiver the quarterback will be looking for. So be ready. Tip: Run DIRECTLY toward your defender. This will help create a blockage. Do not cut out until you feel receiver #1 cut off your butt. |
W | Route: Deep-out, run 15 steps upfield and turn to sideline coming slightly downfield Purpose: Your a decoy trying to draw the deep defenders away from the center of the field. Tip: Line up halfway between quarterback and sideline. |
1 | Slant route: Run diagonally to middle of field. Aim is to cut off #3 receiver’s butt. Purpose: By cutting off #3 your defender is blocked by him leaving you open. Tip: Cut off #3’s butt and then look for the ball immediately as you are the PRIMARY receiver. |
C | Decoy slant route: Run 2 steps toward your defender, then slant toward weak side (where the single receiver is) Purpose: Your goal is to draw the middle defender AWAY from the middle of the field. That is where the #1 receiver will catch the ball. Tip: You WANT the defender to cover you. Cuz when he does, he leaves the middle open. So look right at him and run toward weak (single receiver sideline) calling for the ball. This will force him to defend you. |
2 | Corner route: run 12 steps, then head toward the corner. Purpose: If the defense bites on the slant to #1, then you should be wide open. Tip: Make sure receiver #1 runs in front of you, so line up 2 steps back. |
Q | Primary receiver: #1 Second receiver: #3 Read: Look to right-hand side of field. Stare down center to draw defender in, and then hit #1 immediately on left slanting in. If #1 is covered it is likely because #3 defender got caught, so look to #3 on the out. |
